What is a Baitcasting Reel?
There are many different types of fishing reels to choose from, and each of them does some things well, while doing other things not so well. The types of reels are the centrepin (fly reel), the baitcasting reel, the fixed spool (spinning) reel, the spin cast reel, and the underspin reel.

The baitcasting reel, is a reel on which the line is mounted on a spool on top of the rod. These spools are shaped like your typical spool of thread and give the baitcaster a sideways look compared with some other reels.

The baitcasting reel requires the cast to propel both the lure and to spin the spool, so a heavier lure may be needed than other types of reels in order to successfully cast. This is may be a disadvantage, but the baitcasting reel gives you better control over lure placement, by allowing you to thumb the spool to control the cast.

You also gain leverage, because the reel is placed closer to the rod, allowing you to fight larger fish more easily. These reels are also geared at ratios that allow you to put more pressure while fighting the fish.

The main disadvantage with these reels is backlash or over run caused by the reel spinning after the cast is finished. It is guaranteed to happen to everyone from time to time, and results in messy line tangles that can be difficult to fix. Also, there are lots of parts to keep clean in order to maintain the reel. All in all, a baitcasting reel can be a valuable asset if you need precise placement of lures or a reel that will handle heavy line easily.
